Take a guided tour of one of two historic San Francisco libraries: the Mechanics Institute Library, 57 Post Street in the financial district, or the Main branch of the San Francisco Public Library, 100 Larkin in the Civic Center area. Both are an easy walk or BART ride from the hotel. Meet in the hotel lobby at 4 p.m., and be escorted on the tour of your choice. We will return in time for the start of the Welcome Reception.

Mechanics Institute Library & Chess Room

mechanics institute library and chess roomsecond floor reading roomDon't miss seeing this beautiful library housed in a one hundred year-old landmark building in the heart of San Francisco's financial district.  Founded just after the Gold Rush to provide education and training for mechanics and to promote California industry, the Institute today is a vibrant cultural center serving the entire Bay Area. 

 

 

 

San Francisco Public Library - Main Library

san francisco public libraryInside this architecturally-significant building, you’ll find a dramatic skylight that floods the interior with light, bridges that connect floors across lightwells, a four-story grand staircase, and a spiral staircase in a glass-enclosed reading room. This tour will showcase these features as well as the library’s extensive special collections, artwork, and exhibits and will allow a peak into back-of-the-house activities, including their state-of-the-art automated book return system. Assistant Chief, Main Library Karen Strauss will host this hour-long tour.
